To counter this, society has implemented a number of mechanisms to reduce the consumption of natural resources and energy.  These include:

• Hybrid vehicles -  a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources (generally gasoline and electricity)

• Product design – using more eco-friendly resources and recycled materials
